NHS Band 8 pay, 2026/27

"Band 8" is not a single pay point. Agenda for Change splits it into four bands — 8a, 8b, 8c and 8d — running from £57,528 to £108,814 a year in England, effective 1 April 2026.

Updated for 2026/27Pay circular effective 1 April 2026 - 31 March 2027

Four bands called Band 8

Bands 1 through 7 are each one scale. Band 8 is where Agenda for Change instead runs four parallel scales — senior specialist and management grades that sit above Band 7 and below Band 9 — and every one of them is still called “Band 8” in ordinary speech. Each sub-band has its own three pay steps, entry, intermediate and top, exactly like the bands below it. Progression from the entry step takes two years and from the intermediate step a further three, the same rhythm in all four.

Which of the four applies to you

Once you know which of the four you are on, its own page below carries the full step table, the unsocial-hours and pension figures worked out for that band specifically, the high cost area supplement at each zone, and a worked take-home example.

Unsocial hours and pension across Band 8

All four Band 8 sub-bands share the same unsocial-hours enhancement percentages as bands 4 through 9 — the same rates apply whether you are on 8a or 8d:

Band 8a unsocial hours enhancement percentages
WhenEnhancement
All Saturday, and weekdays after 20:00 and before 06:00Time plus 30%
All Sunday and public holidaysTime plus 60%

Pension contributions do not work the same way: the rate is set by actual pensionable pay, not by band, and Band 8’s wide range crosses two contribution-tier boundaries between 8a’s entry step and 8d’s top step — the table above shows the entry-step rate for each sub-band moving up as the pay does. A part-time post is tiered on what it actually pays, not on the band’s full-time headline figure, which usually means a lower rate.

Band 7 sits directly below this range and Band 9 directly above it — the ceiling of the Agenda for Change scale this site covers. For every band on one page, see NHS pay bands. For what any of these figures becomes after tax, National Insurance and pension, see take-home pay.
